Current Policy Work

Updates on legislation and policy initiatives Councillor Al-Zubi is working on at Cambridge City Council.

Housing Policy

Affordable Housing & Tenant Protections

Councillor Al-Zubi is currently working on several housing policy initiatives aimed at increasing affordable housing stock and strengthening tenant protections in Cambridge.

Recent Actions:

• Co-sponsored policy order to expand tenant notification requirements for rent increases
• Supported amendments to inclusionary housing zoning to increase affordable unit requirements
• Working with the Housing Committee on preservation strategies for existing affordable housing

Public Health & Safety

Community Health Initiatives

Current work focuses on expanding community-based health and safety programs, including mental health crisis response and substance use support services.

Recent Actions:

• Voted to expand funding for the Cambridge HEART mobile crisis intervention program
• Co-sponsored resolution supporting harm reduction services and overdose prevention sites
• Working with Public Safety Committee on community violence prevention programs

Climate & Environment

Climate Action & Environmental Policy

Legislation addressing climate change mitigation, building emissions, and equitable access to green spaces and sustainable transportation.

Recent Actions:

• Supported Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance updates to accelerate emissions reductions
• Co-sponsored policy order to expand tree canopy protection in residential neighborhoods
• Working on improvements to cycling infrastructure and pedestrian safety measures

Economic Development

Workforce & Economic Policy

Policy work related to labor standards, small business support, and economic development that benefits all Cambridge residents.

Recent Actions:

• Voted in support of living wage ordinance updates for city contractors and vendors
• Co-sponsored resolution supporting worker organizing rights in local businesses
• Working with Economic Development Committee on small business grants and technical assistance programs
